Enter the Redoak Boutique Beer Café in Clarence St, Sydney and you enter what can only be described as beer heaven. From the heat and glare of the street, you are transported to an authentic, turn of the century Belgian bier café. The bar tables have Italian mosaic tiles inlaid to form the word “Redoak”.  Rows of glasses line the wall – tulip, balloon and flute styles and across the room, the restaurant is comfortable and inviting with antique globe chandeliers spreading soft light.

The Redoak Brewery was started in 2004, and has grown to become Sydney’s most awarded brewery – the epitome of beer perfection. On the day that I visited, I counted 21 Redoak brews on the menu, with 12 of these on tap.

A really good way to start sampling the brews is to have one of the tasting plates matched with a different beer or cider. The seafood selection of four, matches prawn ceviche with pale Cellar Beer, followed by cider with pan-seared scallop. Then the Organic Pale Ale is matched with soft-shelled crab. This Pale Ale has floral, lychee and peach skin aromas, and caramel, lemon and orange notes with a long finish. With 4.6% ABV, this amazingly delicious beer is on tap at the café, and available in bottles at some retailers.

Then the Bitter with mussel pie- the Redoak Bitter is dark mahogany in colour with strong hop bitterness and an earthy finish.

I finished with the Lambic Blackberry Wheat beer for dessert. This is clear, rose pink with an aroma of berries, apple and blossom. It was tart and refreshing, a pink champagne of beers.

Another excellent way to get acquainted with Redoak craft beers is to come to one of their beer and food appreciation classes, held on the first Saturday of each month.

Over a period of two and a half hours, five tasting dishes are served together with a matching Redoak beer. Master Brewer, David Hollyoak and Manager, Janet Hollyoak give informative comments throughout the tastings, describing each dish and the accompanying Redoak beer. The Bowral Brewing Company was started in 2005 and makes the superb “Pigs Fly” Pale Ale and Pilsner. Having won quite a few medals for these, I wondered just how good, say, the Pale Ale could be. It was time for a taste off.

I put the “Pigs Fly” Pale Ale up against the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, from Chico, California (luckily, I had a bottle in the fridge).

Let’s set the record straight. Sierra Nevada PA is a truly iconic beer. It frequently appears in the list of the top 50 beers in the world. It is, in short, one of America’s and the world’s greatest beers.

I may be going out on a limb here, but the Bowral Brewing Company is not far away from this American icon with the “Pigs Fly” Pale Ale. The depth of flavour is toe-to-toe with the American, with a perfect balance of bitterness and malt, citrus and pine/resin flavours, and a long bitter finish.  The amazing floral and malt aroma lasts to the end of the glass. Wow! So full of flavour.  Copper coloured and with 4.6% ABV and plenty of Chinook and Cascade hops, this is a real winner.

The Pilsner is also a stunning example of the Bohemian-style, made with Amarillo, Saaz and Hallertau hops. This is a clear, pale gold with a rich, creamy head and a delicate aroma of citrus and hop. The taste has notes of lemon and bitter hop, making this a beautifully balanced beer, with a long, smooth hop finish.  This also has 4.6% ABV.

Keep it coming, Australia.  These beers prove that we can produce a world-class product.

Now here’s an interesting beer story.  Geoffrey Scharer was a craft beer legend.  He started making beer in 1987 in Picton, south of Sydney and created magnificent beers like Scharer’s Bock and Scharer’s Lager. His Bock is the only Sydney beer included in “Craft Beer World” by Mark Dredge* –a record of 350 of the World’s Finest Beers. That puts it in the top 1% of beers in the world. It is described as dark brown, toasty with chocolate and dried fruit flavours and a balancing bitterness.

The “Australian Hotel” in the Rocks area of Sydney is the only pub to sell the famous Scharer’s Bock, and its reputation is well deserved. It is certainly a beer full of fruity flavours and it is at the same time creamy with a sort of rum and raisin character.

I also sampled Scharer’s Lager at the “Australian Hotel” on an Australia Day weekend. Available on tap like the Bock, it’s clear, pale gold, fruity and citrusy with a smooth hop finish. It went beautifully with a Kangaroo Pizza freshly made at this pub. (go on…somebody say it; “Did it have plenty of hops?”).

Sadly, Geoffrey Scharer passed away in 2012, after pioneering the creation of two remarkable Sydney craft beers. I remain hopeful that his beers will continue to be brewed for many years to come.

The Red Tape Brewing Company has one brewpub situated right on the water’s edge at Darling Harbour.  It is called the King St Brewhouse and Restaurant. To sit at one of the outside tables, sip on a pint of their ale on a hot summer’s day and gaze at the water is certainly one of life’s greatest pleasures.

There are three things to note about this brewery. First -the ales are fabulous, and “Wood Duck” Cream Ale is one of the best beers I have tasted. It pours into a pint glass starting as all foam, dense and creamy. Deep amber and clear, it has aromas of mango and passionfruit. It is beautifully balanced with citrus and bitter orange notes and a malty, almost marmalade finish. The other regular beers are the “Old Brown Duck” Brown Ale, “Fish River” Golden Ale, “Perfect Storm” lager and “Fat Jack’s” Stout.

Frankly, I seldom get past the “Wood Duck” as I find it irresistible. I really must try the others again sometime. There are also single batch beers, generally including an American Pale Ale. There was one that I tried called “Coolship”, definitely a cool and refreshing ale. Also tried the Autumnal Saison, a Belgian farmhouse-style ale that was full of fruit and spice.

Second – This venue is not a James Squire brewery anymore, and since April 2013 it became independently run. James Squire beers, were brewed here, but they now come from the Malt Shovel Brewery in Camperdown, Sydney.

Third – This is one of the few brewpubs that does not bottle its beer, nor sell kegs to other pubs. In other words, the King St Brewhouse is the only place in Sydney – or the world – to drink their beers. Which explains why I keep going back there. There is a rumour of expansion, and in the future, these great beers may be available in bottles or kegs. Here’s hoping it’s soon.

The history of this brewery is a little complicated – in fact I’m not certain where it is anymore. Anyway, bear with me if only to hear a bit of Sydney beer history.

In 2005, the Schwartz Brewery started producing a range of Schwartz beers. The brewery was located on the lower floor of the Macquarie Hotel in Wentworth Avenue, near Central Station, Sydney.

In September 2012, the brewery changed its name to the Sydney Brewery, and started to make “Paddo” Pale Ale, “Newtown” Bitter and “Darlo” Dark Ale – all named after nearby Sydney suburbs.

Fast forward to 10th January 2014, when I enter the “Macquarie Hotel” to sample the “Newtown” Bitter and the “Paddo” Pale Ale.  The “Newtown” Bitter is golden with a creamy head and strong floral aroma. There is a rich, leafy character with a long, bitter finish.

The “Paddo” is deep amber, fruity ale with plenty of hop flavour and a satisfying mineral finish. This was, however, the last keg of “Paddo” to be made at the (old) Sydney Brewery, and I more or less had the last glass. The keg was empty by 1pm, and I had arrived just a few minutes earlier. Even as I drank from the last keg of “Paddo”, the brewery was being dismantled and packed ready to be transported to a new site – the rumour was either Lovedale in the Hunter Valley or possibly somewhere in Sydney.  So where had the Sydney Brewery been moved to?

A few weeks later, I purchased a bottle of “Glamarama” Summer Ale – pale yellow with lots of sparkle and hints of new hay and orange. Plenty of taste for a summer beer, with a long hop finish and 4.6% ABV. Peering at the back of the bottle, the answer became clear – the business address of the new Sydney Brewery is World Square, in the heart of Sydney…but the new brewery is in Lovedale. Just loving it!

Balmain is one of Sydney’s oldest suburbs and in the nineteenth century it was home to the working families whose men laboured in the nearby shipyards, foundries and workshops. There was even a coalmine in Balmain that operated until 1931.  A shaft was sunk, then the miners tunnelled north, deep underneath Sydney Harbour.

Complementing this tough, working man’s town, Balmain then boasted that it had more pubs per person than any other town in Australia. Of the over 50 that originally existed, there are still some 20 historic pubs serving cold beer in Balmain. In a complete reversal of its original status, Balmain is now one of the trendy, protected suburbs of Sydney. A nineteenth century workman’s cottage is now a valuable and sought after property, probably worth at least a million dollars.

Right until the mid-1980’s, there was a brewery in Balmain producing fine ales – the Great Old Balmain Brewery. After its closure, it became the dream of a group of dedicated Balmain brewers to re-create iconic Balmain beers. This dream has now become a reality. The new Balmain Brewing Company opened in 2010, and makes three great beers, widely available bottled and on tap in a number of Sydney pubs.

Sampling the Pilsner in “The Dry Dock” pub in Balmain, it pours a clean pale gold, with a light citrus aroma and taste with a strong hop finish. It has a balanced flavour from the Czech and New Zealand Saaz hops, and is 4.5% ABV.

The Pale Ale was next to try at the “Royal Oak”, also in Balmain. It has a trace of cloudiness and is, copper-red with a creamy head. There are rich malty caramels, tropical fruit, spice and citrus. This is an English-style Pale Ale with 4.9% ABV. It uses three hop varieties and four malts – no wonder this is such a stunning beer.

The “Original Bock” can be found in bottles, more commonly in the winter months. This is dark brown with a foamy, caramel head and fruity aromas. It has bitter hop flavours combined with stone-fruit and toffee. Three different malts are used to make this dark beer, and it has 5.5% ABV.

I recommend a walk around the fascinating old town of Balmain. I’ll definitely be returning to sample the craft beer again!
