4 PINES BREWING COMPANY
Address: 29/43-45, East Esplanade, Manly (north of Sydney)- Brewpub. Also a second brewery in Brookvale.
Type: Brewery and Brewpub
4 Pines Brewing Company was started in mid-2008, and from then has become an iconic brand and an amazing brewpub. The pub has a stunning view of the northern Sydney Harbour and is about one minute away from the Manly ferry wharf. Just perfect for a trip out of Sydney by water.
Try the tasting rack of their five mainstay beers – Hefeweizen, (which uses some wheat malts),Kolsch, Pale Ale, Extra Special Bitter (ESB) and Stout. Then order a pint of your favourite. I really love the Kolsch lager with its light, citrus aroma and malty flavour. The Pale Ale has aromas of resin and grapefruit with lots of malt up front and a bitter hop finish. Delicious. The stout is an Irish style, almost black, full of chocolate and mocha flavours with a long hop finish.
4 Pines also brews special batches, such as Wit, (a Belgian Wheat Ale), Belgian strong ale and Marzen, a traditional Oktoberfest beer. The Keller Door Imperial Indian Brown Ale was available in 500ml bottles until Spring 2014, and this was a stunner. Masses of hop flavour with fruit and hedgerow notes, and 8% ABV. More of this please!
Not only are the 4 Pine brews available at the brewery, but on tap at other selected venues. The Hefeweizen, Kolsch, Pale Ale and ESB are also available in bottles.
The 4 Pines Brewing Company is also famous for designing the first beer to go into space. On the 26 th February 2011, a specially designed 4 Pines Stout was consumed on a commercial zero gravity flight. The beer and the bottle were space-engineered to reduce the effects of carbonation in zero gravity, (too much burping). Further, the beer tastes were adjusted to allow for the need for increased flavours. Apparently, the tongue swells up slightly in zero G, making it more difficult to detect subtle flavours in space. It is thought that this is the first time a beer has been (legally) served on such a flight.
