GANG OF FOUR
Address: 6/9 Powells Rd, Brookvale
Type: Gypsy/ Contract Brewer
Beers : Double Hop Ale, Members Lager and “The Venetian” Red Ale
Gang of Four is one of the latest microbreweries to start up in the Northern Beaches area of Sydney. The name is appropriate for more than one reason – it is now one the four craft beers on the Northern Beaches – Four Pines (Manly and Brookvale), Nomad (Brookvale), Modus Operandi (Mona Vale), and now Gang of Four, also in Brookvale. 2014 was quite a year for the Northern Beaches craft beer scene – all of the “Big Four” started in that year, except for Four Pines which started in 2008.
I intend to try all of the Gang of Four beers as they become more widespread. The Double Hop Ale was on tap early 2015 at the Collaroy Beach Club. With 5.5% ABV it is deep amber in colour with a captivating aroma of resinous, “ozony” hops and a hop-driven taste with notes of passionfruit and apricot with a long bitter hop finish. This is not over-hopped and is a delicious and refreshing beer. I give it 95 out of 100. Really want to sup more of this one.
Gang of Four also produce the Members Lager, 4.4% ABV and made with Pride of Ringwood hops and German malts.
Then there is “The Venetian” Red Ale, with a deep burgundy colour, and made with wild Italian rice and pale and red malts. Sounds delicious and this has 5.4% ABV. I look forward to trying these beers as well.
Take a look at the Gang of Four website (www.gangoffour.com.au) for more information about their groundbreaking brews. The labels show some great artwork too. This could be the start of something big.
