Nomad Brewing Company opened its door to the public on the 24th August 2014. Situated in the suburb of Brookvale on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, this is the third microbrewery to start in this area.
Nomad Brewing is made up of a consortium of brewers, including John and Kerrie Latta, Paolo Bertani, brewer Brooks Caretta and Leonardo Di Vincenzo who headed Birra del Borgo in Italy. The Italian influence is evident everywhere – an espresso coffee machine near the bar (serving real espresso coffee in small cups) and a bright red Ferrari parked casually on the forecourt on the opening day. Right next to several thousand empty beer bottles just waiting to be filled…
Nomad Brewing Company is really ahead with having its own automated bottling line. It will soon be able to sell its three main beers at many food outlets and beer retailers in the area.
They offer a free tasting paddle first, then after you’ve decided on your favourite, you can buy a big 355 ml beer for only $5.
There is the “Sideways” Pale Ale, with under 4% ABV, this is a pale gold and full of hop flavour, developing into a tangy, bitter finish to this refreshing beer.
Next is the “Jet Lag” India Pale Ale, a deep amber colour with 6 to 6.5% ABV, containing pale and ale malts with lots of hops added in the brewing process. There are caramel notes and citrus flavours, enhanced by the addition of finger lime peel – now there’s a nice Australian touch.
The last of the trio is the “Long Trip” Saison (traditional naturally fermented farmhouse style beer). This is copper coloured and has about 6.5% ABV. It uses barley and wheat malts enhanced with the addition of roasted coffee beans. There are also European and American hops and also some wattle seeds (more truly Australian flavours). It all goes to create a uniquely spicy and mellow beer, with hints of candy at the end.
On the opening day there was also an India Pale Ale made with “Victoria’s Secret” Australian hops and, finally, a superb smoked Porter called “Rauch Amici”, (the malt is smoked and then used to make the beer). This also has an incredible secret ingredient – you’ll have to go to Nomad Brewing Company to find out what it is.
The Nomad Brewing Company also does growler fills. – keep an eye on their website www.nomadbrewingco.com.au for the opening times.
It won’t be long before those bottles of Nomad hit the shops all around the area. Nomad beers will also soon be on tap at the “Pumphouse” in Darling Harbour (September 2014).
