Enter the Redoak Boutique Beer Café in Clarence St, Sydney and you enter what can only be described as beer heaven. From the heat and glare of the street, you are transported to an authentic, turn of the century Belgian bier café. The bar tables have Italian mosaic tiles inlaid to form the word “Redoak”. Rows of glasses line the wall – tulip, balloon and flute styles and across the room, the restaurant is comfortable and inviting with antique globe chandeliers spreading soft light.
The Redoak Brewery was started in 2004, and has grown to become Sydney’s most awarded brewery – the epitome of beer perfection. On the day that I visited, I counted 21 Redoak brews on the menu, with 12 of these on tap.
A really good way to start sampling the brews is to have one of the tasting plates matched with a different beer or cider. The seafood selection of four, matches prawn ceviche with pale Cellar Beer, followed by cider with pan-seared scallop. Then the Organic Pale Ale is matched with soft-shelled crab. This Pale Ale has floral, lychee and peach skin aromas, and caramel, lemon and orange notes with a long finish. With 4.6% ABV, this amazingly delicious beer is on tap at the café, and available in bottles at some retailers.
Then the Bitter with mussel pie- the Redoak Bitter is dark mahogany in colour with strong hop bitterness and an earthy finish.
I finished with the Lambic Blackberry Wheat beer for dessert. This is clear, rose pink with an aroma of berries, apple and blossom. It was tart and refreshing, a pink champagne of beers.
Another excellent way to get acquainted with Redoak craft beers is to come to one of their beer and food appreciation classes, held on the first Saturday of each month.
Over a period of two and a half hours, five tasting dishes are served together with a matching Redoak beer. Master Brewer, David Hollyoak and Manager, Janet Hollyoak give informative comments throughout the tastings, describing each dish and the accompanying Redoak beer. They also cover many other topics relating to beer, such as the type of glass to serve a particular brew in through to the legal requirements for a list of ingredients on Big Brewer beer labels (none).
These classes attract a lot of people so please book early to get a place.
