Shenanigans is one of the new team of Sydney inner-west brewers showing us all how to make good Aussie craft beers. Dan Beers and Sam Haldane brew as gypsy (contract) brewers out of Marrickville and add their unique touch to the, so far, three Shenanigans beers.
I tried the “Winston” Pale Ale, on tap at the “Welcome Hotel” in Rozelle. At 5.6% ABV, it is a rich gold, cloudy ale with dominant hop aromas and tastes that include orange, mango, resin and grapefruit. Naturally, it has a long, bitter finish, and as well as the Australian, US and New Zealand hops, oats are also an ingredient.
The “Winston” Pale Ale, and other Shenanigans beers, are also available in a big 640ml bottles in selected stores. I bought my “Winston” bottled for a comparison tasting with the draught beer, at the “Oak Barrel” specialist craft beer, whisky and wine store in Elizabeth St, Sydney. Both bottled and tap “Winston” have a really rich, creamy head and those hoppy aromas and unique combination of flavours make “Winston” a superb beer.
There is also the “Flight Path” American Brown Ale, that uses an infusion of coffee beans during brewing and the “Red Sky” India Pale Ale, this being made with the inclusion of jasmine and hibiscus flowers. Mostly available in the Sydney inner-west area, Shenanigans beers are clever and delicious and use unique ingredients to reach a flavour high.
